Eagle Scout bat box project makes lasting impact, provides long-term roosting habitat for Tennessee bat species

Volunteer opportunities within the Wildlife and Fisheries Division of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency are available to those individuals who want to gain experience working for wildlife. Austin Berg, an Eagle Scout, recently completed a project by building bat boxes for the Wildlife Diversity program as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Wildlife Diversity Coordinator Josh Campbell oversaw the project and supplied the plans and supplies for the boxes to be built. Biologist Dustin Thames met Austin to assist the young volunteer in placing two of the bat houses on a barn at Haley Jaqueth Wildlife Management Area (WMA), just south of Franklin, TN. "I contacted TWRA, and I got an email within a week or two," said Austin. "It feels good," he concluded, "I know it will have a lasting impact."
